NASA Launches Mars Science Laboratory

Yesterday, NASA launched the Mars Science Laboratory which carries a car sized rover named Curiosity. Liftoff from Cape Canaveral occurred at 10:02 am local time. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said “MSL will tell us critical things we need to know about Mars, and while it advances science, we’ll be working on the capabilities for a human mission to the Red Planet and to other destinations where we’ve never been.”

The mission will go on for 2 years and will pioneer precision landing technology and a sky-crane touchdown to place Curiosity near the foot of a mountain inside Gale Crater on Aug. 6, 2012. The rover will investigate whether the region has ever offered conditions favorable for microbial life, including the chemical ingredients for life. Mars Science Laboratory Project Manager Peter Theisinger of NASA said: “The launch vehicle has given us a great injection into our trajectory, and we’re on our way to Mars, the spacecraft is in communication, thermally stable and power positive.”

The mission’s landing site offers Curiosity access for driving to layers of the mountain inside Gale Crater. Observations from orbit have identified clay and sulfate minerals in the lower layers, indicating a wet history.

With this mission, we could be one step closer to finding out if, in the future we could potentially build infrastructures like hotels and casino, restaurants or even stores. Could Mars become a top holiday destination? We never know… Only time will tell!

We follow best practices ofelectronics recycling in the best interest of the environment. Global Environmental Services has adopted the requirements of the Basel Convention and we require all of our downstream partners do the same.

GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICE’S IMPACT ON THE WORLD

We are an electronics recycler that does something very rare in this industry.

We don’t use landfills.

We don’t export.

We truly care about the people who deal with the horrific results of illegal dumping in their communities. Citizens of third world countries should not suffer the consequences of our electronic waste. We will not participate in that process.

We work to uphold environmentally sustainable practices that meet or exceed Environmental Protection Agency requirements for zero landfill operations. At the end of the day, it all adds up to the best possible value for our customers.

Not to mention peace of mind.

GES’S E-STEWARDS PLEDGE

“Every year, an estimated 400 million units of obsolete electronics are scrapped. Four billion pounds of electronic waste, or e-waste, was discarded in the United States in 2005, accounting for between 2% and 4% of the municipal solid waste stream. As much as 87.5% of this was incinerated or dumped in landfills. Of the remaining 12.5% collected for recycling, industry sources claim that about 80% is exported to developing countries where it is processed in primitive conditions, severely endangering the environment, workers and communities. Pollution created by irresponsible e-waste processing can also come back to haunt those in the exporting countries as well in the form of air pollution fallout via long-range transport.”

— The Basel Action Network

Down GES's e-Stewards PledgeGlobal Environmental Services is proud to have adopted the e-Stewards pledge as our policy forelectronics recycling at the highest level of responsibility.

  • We will not allow any hazardous e-waste we handle or control to be sent to solid waste (nonhazardous waste) landfills or incinerators for disposal or energy recovery, either directly or through intermediaries.
  • Consistent with decisions of the international Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, we will not allow the export of hazardous e-Waste we handle or control to be exported from developed to developing countries, either directly or through intermediaries, throughout final disposition.
  • We will not allow any e-waste we handle to be sent to prisons for recycling either directly or through intermediaries.
  • We assure that we have an “environmental management system” in place that is either certified or otherwise adequate for the nature and size of the company’s operations, and that our operation meets best practices.
  • We commit to ensuring that the entire recycling chain, including downstream intermediaries and recovery operations such as smelters, are meeting all applicable environmental and health regulations. Every effort will be made to only make use of those facilities (e.g. smelters), which provide the most efficient and least polluting recovery services available globally.
  • We agree to provide visible tracking of hazardous e-waste throughout the product recycling chain. The tracking information should show the final disposition of all hazardous e-waste materials. If there is a concern about trade secrets, an independent auditor acceptable to parties concerned can be used to verify compliance with this pledge.
  • We agree to provide adequate assurance (e.g. bonds) to cover environmental and other costs of the closure of our facility, and additionally to provide liability insurance for accidents and incidents involving wastes under our control and ownership. Additionally we will ensure due diligence throughout the product chain.
  • We further agree to support design for environment and toxics use reduction programs and/or legislation for electronic products.

electronics recycling

Electronics Recycling (eRecycling)

WHAT WE DO

As a nationwide premier provider of electronics recycling services, GES is focused on environmental, sustainable processes that meet or exceed EPA requirements for zero landfill operations

WHAT WE RECYCLE

  • Computers
  • CRT/LCD Monitors
  • Printers
  • Circuit Boards
  • Fax Machines
  • Copy Machines
  • Hard Drives
  • Laptops

At GES we believe in the Highest Use Principle. Our first goal is always to re-use a whole unit as long as our customers allow us. If that is not feasible, due to the condition or age of the equipment, we then look to reuse parts from that unit. As a last resort, we break down each and every item and return the original parts back to the manufacturing stream via our BAN e-Stewards approved downstream diligence.

We do not landfill and we do not export.

In the last year alone, we processed over one million pounds of electronic waste. Thats over 1,200 tons of steel, copper, and plastics, thousands of printers and phones and hundreds of shredded hard drivesthat could fill 20 football fields. NONE of our eRecycling processes, at anytime, tolerate trashing our plant by land filling any piece of equipment. More importantly, we refuse to export our waste to ruin the lives of others, who have no choice in the matter, but to live and work in unacceptable conditions. Cleaning up the planet does not mean moving electronic waste somewhere that it is not seen.

In order to harvest the maximum amount of parts and value from these electronics, we use a process of manual dismantle and salvage. We take pride in knowing that also means creating jobs back into our economy. It is important to GES to know that we provide a means for our employees to sustain their lifestyle, and provide for their families.

In addition, we do not outsource any labor to the prison system because we simply value the security of the information contained on your equipment and only use facilities we can randomly audit. All demanufacturing is done in our fully secured Georgetown, KY facility.

We invite you to take a tour and audit for yourself.

“In an industry not known for environmentally-friendly practices, we stand out. We recycle all kinds of electronics – computers, printers, cell phones, you name it. We destroy data using the most secure methods and we re-use materials whenever possible. Our numbers tell the truth. We know exactly where everything goes – which can’t be said for a number of our competitors.”
